Include Biophilic Design in Your Life

Biophilia

Biophilia has been translated many times over by different cultures throughout history.  The greek origins of the word means the "Love of Life".  In the field of biology it was coined as the "urge to affiliate with other forms of life".  Connecting with nature is often described as a rejuvenating physical and psychological experience.

We are eluding those positive experiences that are deeply rooted when we surround ourselves with cubicle walls and a grey concrete landscape. It's recognized by experts in many scientific fields that nature is essential for the continuation of the human species.

Modern day architects, interior designers and landscape engineers are continuing to develop the principles of biophilic design by incorporating nature inspired elements into our designed environment.

~ E.O. Wilson
Biophilic Design can Improve our Lives

  • Are biophilic design principles only a theory with luxurious appeal or is it a proven science?

  • How seriously should we take the evidence?

Science may explain why interior plantscaping is such a popular trend.  When our eyes perceive natural scenes, the mu (opioid) receptors are highly stimulated, triggering feelings of pleasure. A completed design should incorporate plants, light, water movement, natural scents that all come together in a peaceful setting.  These are essential elements of biophilic design that will create a state of being in which creative task performance is increased.

Very seriously. Urbanization has brought with it higher levels of stress, crime, depression and lower levels of productivity and learning.  Stress from this type of environment can lead to mental health disorders and cardiovascular diseases and create a higher amount of absenteeism in the workplace. Considering this, it can be concluded that incorporating nature into your built environment is not just a luxury or health benefit, but a sound economic investment.

City from Below

Mental Health effects of Living in an Urban Environment

For the first time in history, more than 50% of the world’s population lives in an urban area. By 2050, 70% of the world’s population will be living in towns and cities (WHO, 2010)

A study published in American Scientist magazine called Perceptual Pleasure and the Brain demonstrated that when test subjects were exposed to views with less visual richness such as a blank wall or a tree‐less street, less pleasurable mental reactions were triggered, including those associated with stress. (Biederman & Vessel, 2006)

The Power of Biophilic Design

Spend a couple paragraphs summing up Biophilic design.  Show examples of Biophilic design in several industries.

A dynamic natural scene including elements such as  plants,  moving water, wildlife, natural scents, a flickering fire or unrhythmic light fractal changes are more likely to hold our attention.

Put Picture of small/medium size living wall.

One thing you can do is start using these principles at home or in the office. Incorporate things like fountains for the sound of moving water. Without mentioning our company, start implying that products like ours will give the same effects.  Start showing images and examples that relate to our products.  Describe soft texture of moss and smooth stones.  Smell of Norfolk Pines.  Dynamic lighting dispersed through the texture of the moss.  Briefly mention that even artificial plants can have the same effect.

Put one more picture of a very large living wall. Something very big and impressive like on the home page because so far this page looks like it might be marketing to residents

Often in this moment, we are so overtaken that we feel the strongest need to photograph and instantly share with friends and family.

Mention using this new science to improve our lives. We can bring nature into our homes.   In the words of Gary Snyder, "Nature is not a place to visit.  It is home."

Health

Shinrin‐yoku is the ancient Japanese practice of restorative walks through natural settings, most often forests.

Forest bathing decreased blood glucose by an impressive 39.7% (Ohtsuka, 1998).

Shinrin‐yoku is the ancient Japanese practice of restorative walks through natural settings, most often forests.

•In English, the direct translation of Shinrin‐yoku is “forest bathing”.
•Research performed over the course of six years tested Shinrin‐yoku’s ability to effectively decrease blood glucose levels in patients who walked 3‐6 kilometers in forested areas.
•Compared with other forms of exercise, which effectively reduced blood glucose levels by 21.2%, forest bathing decreased blood glucose by an impressive 39.7% (Ohtsuka, 1998).

Forests excrete organic compounds called phytoncides, and as we breath them, human hormonal secretion and autonomic nervous functions are stabilized.

•New Shinrin‐yoku studies show that inhaling these pungent compounds has tremendous health benefits that are difficult to reap in the urban and built environments.
•Such benefits include increased Natural Killer (NK) cell activity (vital for deterring cancer) for up to 30 days after the forest walk.

Connecting with Nature

Humans have a strong urge to physically connect with nature.

Certain things like...

-Running your hands through blades of grass

-The warm sun and cool shade on your skin

-Walking barefoot in the sand

...can improve our mood and creativity.

Campfire in Forest

Spending your time trekking the outdoors will peak your thought process, curiosity and energize you.

People often enjoy...

-Seeing a waterfall

-The smell of pine trees

-Watching a campfire burn through the night

...for reasons they can't explain.

-Finding a private nook in the forest feels exciting and adventurous.

-Sleeping in the woods and listening to the forest can be relaxing and romantic.

It is in these sacred moments of tranquility when we are touched by nature that we find peace.

Have you ever saw a soft pillow of moss and have the sensation that you want to touch it?

The satisfaction of watching a campfire burn through the night.

Why do we like to visit waterfalls?

Wanted to walk barefoot in the sand?

The smell of a pine cone?

Deeply rooted in us.  Proven science.  Not a fly by night theory.

Nature in the built environment is not just a luxury but a sound investment.

Homeostasis- sympathetic and parasympathetic

Humans are innately drawn to nature because we are part of it.

Test your fears, you will often overcome them.

"To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow" ~Audrey Hepburn

Get lost in nature an you will find yourself.

Nature never goes out of style.
